Capsule Wardrobes
Prolog:
Working in the fashion industry, my closet started to explode. While I enjoyed it at first, I knew this was not healthy for me, and especially not healthy for the planet. I googled the internet for a healthier way of living, prompted on all kinds of recipes for vegetarian food, but couldn't find any recipe that tells me exactly how to buy less clothes. Of course, I found advice, but nota real clear prescription telling me how to do this. And the thing was, I knew I wasn't the only woman struggling with this.
Challenge:
Can I create a method for all women who struggle with the same issues as I do? Women who want to clean out their closets, want to buy less, want to buy conscious, but have no idea how & where to start?
Solution:
Browsing the internet, I found an article about a capsule closet of 33 styles. It was not exactly the answer I was hoping for, but it did trigger something. I tried. I started wearing those 33 styles, and kept a journal. An idea settled in my head. With my love for maths, and my expertise in running fashion shows, directing campaigns, and styling thousands of fashion shoots, I knew I had the right skills to do something good. I could give the women some tools.
So I shifted perspectives and turned questions around. What would be good for the planet, rather than what would be good for the consumer? I used the same skills I normally use to get people to buy more, to design a recipe to buy less. Two years of research followed, I talked to psychologists about reward systems of your brain, I tested different methods with a diversity of women, I worked with colorful styles, neutral tones, and prints. I refined and I adapted. Finally, the recipe for the perfect method was born. A method that suits everyone, no matter your personal style, regardless of your body shape. During this research process, a publisher found me and the book was a fact. A book that not only gives you the answers on how to buy less, it also gives psychological insight into your buying behavior, it tells you about styling, body shapes, the environmental impact of different materials, caretaking of your clothes, and more.
Best of all? It’s a fun read, and the method is really, really easy to do! To this day, I still receive mails, DMs from happy readers, and happy followers.
Curious? Just give it a try. You can find more about capsule wardrobes here, and more about the method here. If you are Dutch, and you like a nice read? You can buy it at your local bookstore, or click here or here, or here.
