70 red heels

Seventy red heels: each representing a Turkish woman who can no longer wear one, because she was murdered between January 2021 and March 2021. The direct reason for the action is the fact that Turkey has withdrawn from the Istanbul Istanbul Convention, a treaty in which countries commit to tackle violence against women and advance their position in society.

The demonstration is inspired by the artwork of Vahit Tuna in Turkey. Turkish artist Tuna hung 440 pairs of shoes on the walls of two buildings. As many as the number of women who died at the hands of a man in Turkey in 2018.

These red heels were shown on a big touristic square in Amsterdam and were made by high school students. Fashion as connector and heels as a powerful metaphor for femicide.
